In almost every European garden you will find small creatures known as gnomes. These cute little earth dwelling creatures originated in Germany. Since their introduction in the 1800s these little garden creatures have traveled all over the world. They are now seen in yards and gardens in the US in addition to many other countries.

It is best to choose one made from a durable material. Some of the most commonly used materials to create lawn gnomes are terra cotta, ceramic, concrete, or resin.

Authentic lawn gnomes will only be male. Other feature of authentic lawn gnomes are a beard and a red hat. Gnomes will usually be in a relaxed pose such as fishing or napping. Modern versions of the garden gnome will be seen in poses which are more animated including working in the garden or playing an instrument. Lawn gnomes are rumored to be nocturnal creatures.

They are also said to possess the ability to know the future and superior strength. This is why lawn gnomes cannot be caught. The three main categories of lawn gnomes consist of leisure gnomes, culture gnomes, and worker gnomes. Worker gnomes are seen with pick axes or other tools they may need.

Leisure gnomes are most often seen at the fishing hole or relaxing with their pipe. Culture gnomes will often be reading books or playing an instrument. There should be a weather resistant base on any type of lawn gnome you select. Placing a gnome on a concrete block or stone will help it stand up to bad weather but it is still best to use a materials that will not rust or rot.
