Growing a great green luscious lawn is typically achieved with the correct tools and knowledge. Planting seed to refurbish bare spots will begin the gardening year off right. Maintaining the new grass early and all year long can help to keep the lawn appearing bright and landscaped nicely. Water is important to grass growth and proper cutting is critical to retain the dark green color of a healthy lawn. Plant grass seed in areas of the lawn which are bare or the grass is thin. Use a raking tool to scratch the surface of the dirt plus apply grass seed thoroughly around the area. Cover with straw, not hay, to stop birds plus alternative animals from running off with the seed. Water plentifully daily till new sprouts of grass begin to show through the straw. Take away the straw once the area has grass growing in plus continue to water daily if you’re in a dry climate. In the spring months, aerate the lawn. This may be achieved with a big tool that is similar to a lawn roller but has spikes located round the roller. The spikes can place holes half inch in diameter plus nearly four inches deep in the lawn each few feet. This allows oxygen plus water to reach the roots of the grass, making it a healthier lawn. Aerators are offered in the push style, or a larger version which acts as a riding mower attachment can be purchased for larger lawns.  

At the start of mowing season, fertilize the lawn with a two-in-1 fertilizer together with a weed killer component. Follow the manufacturer’s directions to locate correct application quantity for the size of the lawn. The fertilizer can sink into the aerated holes, feeding the root system of the grass plus killing off any patches of crab grass and weeds present. This weed killer will even eliminate any patches of clover present within the lawn. As these kinds of vegetation die off, the grass will begin to take over the space. Grass seed may also be applied to the areas to quicken the process.  

Prior to making the 1st cut with the mower, have the blade sharpened. A clean, sharp blade will cut the top of the grass while not causing damage to the shaft that a dull blade will. Replacement blades can be sharpened or purchased at a local garden supply store. Do not cut grass shorter than 2 inches. This may permit moisture to stay in the soil, promoting a healthy grass base.
